Pisces: dates, traits and compatibility

Illustration evoking the zodiac sign Pisces

The last sign, and it feels like it. Two fish swimming in opposite directions, tied together: a perfect image for Pisces, forever pulled between the world as it is and the world as they’d dream it. Jupiter, the old ruler, brings the faith and the breadth. Neptune, the modern one, brings the fog, the music, the dissolving of edges. It’s the most boundless sign in the zodiac, and that’s both its glory and its undoing.

The empathy nobody asked them to have

Pisces is described as sensitive, which undersells it. They don’t just sympathise with your feelings; they catch them, the way you’d catch a cold. A Piscean walks into a tense room and absorbs the tension as if it were their own, then wonders why they feel terrible for no reason they can name.

In the readings I do, Pisces clients are the ones who’ve been carrying everybody else’s pain and have no idea where they end and other people begin. The compassion is real and rare. The boundaries are usually nonexistent, and without them this kind of softness gets walked all over.

The escape hatch

Here’s the honest part. Pisces is the sign most prone to slipping the leash of reality, and that takes healthy and unhealthy forms. The healthy ones make art, dream, pray, lose themselves in something beautiful. The unhealthy ones lose themselves in a glass, a fantasy, a person who was never going to be saved. Neptune doesn’t distinguish; it just dissolves whatever’s hard to face.

Mutable water gives them their shape-shifting kindness, the way they become what each person needs. It can leave them with no self of their own.

If you’re a Pisces: your sensitivity is a genuine gift in a world running short on it. But you cannot pour from an empty jug, and rescuing people who won’t rescue themselves only drowns you both. Some days the kindest, most spiritual thing you can do is come back to dry land and look after the fish.

In love, for better or worse

A Pisces falls for who you could be as readily as for who you are, and that’s the romance and the danger in one. They’ll see the best in a partner long after the evidence has gone the other way, and pour themselves into a person who was never going to give it back. The fantasy is half the appeal. Reality, when it intrudes, can be a genuine grief.

The water signs hold them safely, Cancer and Scorpio both, who understand depth and don’t ask a Pisces to be more practical than they are. Virgo, the opposite sign, is the grounding match: the realist who gently tethers the dreamer to dry land, and learns from the Piscean how to feel a little more and analyse a little less.

What a Pisces needs above all is a partner who’ll hold a boundary the Pisces can’t hold themselves. Someone who notices when the giving has tipped into self-erasure and says, kindly, enough. With that anchor in place, the Piscean softness becomes the rarest thing a relationship can have: a person who genuinely feels with you, rather than merely beside you. Without it, they simply dissolve into whoever needs them most.
