Dreaming about money: meaning

Illustration of a dream about Money

Money in a dream almost never turns out to be about money. People wake from one of these convinced it’s a tip about their bank balance, and the disappointment when you explain otherwise is real, but the dream is usually saying something more useful than that. In the reading tradition, coins and notes tend to stand in for things you can’t put a price on.

Worth, not wealth

The interpretation I rely on most reads money as self-worth and personal value. What you’re really dreaming about is what you feel you’re worth, how secure or precarious you feel in yourself, where your sense of value sits at the moment. The money is the costume; the subject is you.

What’s happening to the money points the reading. Finding money is commonly read as discovering value you didn’t know you had, a talent, a strength, a sense of yourself that’s been overlooked, and people often have those dreams when they’re on the cusp of recognising something good about themselves. Losing money flips it, pointing to a fear of losing standing, security, or self-respect, a worry that something you value is slipping. Being given money carries a particular charge: it tends to read as feeling valued by someone else, or as an opportunity arriving, sometimes as a question about whether you can accept good things when they’re offered.

Security is the other steady thread. Money dreams cluster around stretches when life feels uncertain, and the dream can simply be your mind chewing over how safe the ground feels. That said, I’d resist forcing the literal reading out entirely. If you’ve genuinely been worried about your finances, the dream may just be that worry doing its rounds at night, nothing more layered than that.

Worth asking yourself

Where do you feel your value is being tested right now? Money dreams tend to track self-worth more than spending, so look there first.

If you found or lost it, what does that match in your waking life? A recent gain in confidence, or a knock to it, often sits right behind these dreams.

And if you were given money, could you accept it freely in the dream, or did it feel uneasy? How you receive matters. Sometimes the dream is asking whether you’ll let yourself take the good that’s on offer.
